Announcements

President's Corner: From the day when the Jan. issue went out till today, we preps have enjoyed a series of events and what's more, there will be only three more months before we will get thru with our exams in May.   We, preps managed to have two meetings during the month and they were much needed for preparation in getting various projects as on the "run" and done smoothly without any "last minute" work. We have our own class constitution already satisfied and our thanks to Marvin Evink and his Constitutional Committee. John Krpan has been searching around in the library and among friends, too, for a story yet to be translated for our prep play. We are to present our prep play to the upperclassmen and the Jr. NAD convention delegates in the auditorium on April 24.   The Champion company that makes all the Gallaudet clothing you find at the bookstore, is working on our class jerseys and we hope to get them very soon, maybe before the spring break or shortly after it. There will be a big day for us when we get them and will show them to you. We'll show you that we have a real good reason in selective those two colors and one different symbol that will be on the left arm of the jersey. It is quite different from those class jerseys of the past and it sure suits our secret purpose of having this symbol on our jerseys.   Two weeks ago there was a meeting between the Knob Hill News editorial staff and the prep class executive board for reshuffling the KHN editorial staff. David Reynolds the former editor in chief was advised to leave his post to permit more participation on the baseball team and for the good of the staff so that it will have an editor in chief who will be available "around the clock". So after interviews with five nominees for this post., the board chose Wilton McMillan to assume it for the rest of the year. Mike Ubowski will share the associate editor's job with Sandra Coco, the recent associate editor. There have been some new faces on the editorial staff and we, the board felt it was necessary to make some changes along with David Reynolds's approval and we hope these changes will be for the good of the Knob Hill News. long live Knob Hill News! We ought not to let apathy beat the creditability of the KHN.  Recently, I had to make a visit over the Walter Reed Army Hospital to see Mr. and Mrs. Seventy-Eight Rats. They are real sick and I'm not sure what the doc told me it was that has caused them to be that bad. I guess he told me it was pneumonia. They are in intensive care and the couple said for me to say hello to you, readers. And what's more, I am sort of hating to say this but it seems to be the truth about them. This couple may not survive for more than two or three more months. I will let you know more about them and their chances to live later in the next issue.   May you have a nice spring break when it comes in two weeks and may the gas situation be only a little bother to you. Have fun!   See you again in the March issue.   Claude Stout

Important Message

Editor in Chief, Wilton McMillan: Hey Gallaudetians, As the new editor-in-chief for the Knob Hill News, I would like to say that it sure has been a tremendous pleasure for me since I started last Monday. There have been some changes in the editorial staff, but however, I want to express how sincerely I feel about my staff. They have shown their complete cooperation and given all their effort. May I ask you to give them credit for all the time they've given up for such a paper and all the work they've done for this paper and for giving almost 60 hours in 9 days.   Sixty hours in 9 days. Believe it or not! They did it! Congratulations, to all of you, members of the Knob Hill News staff. Although this isn't adequate enough to express my sincere thanks, however I wanted you to at least know that I appreciate it.   Linda Collins, our student advisor, is also to be given credit for this paper, too, for she spent quite a period of time with us. Linda, we appreciate it very much.   There are several others who should be given credit for, but it would take up too much space.   As you know now, I'm the new Editor in Chief for the Knob Hill News, I want to express again how I feel about the old Editor in Chief. The main reason I want to tell you this, is that I don't want you to get any wrong ideas about him. He is not to be completely blamed for everything. He had some trouble with his staff. Maybe he could have done better, but who knows that I could have been in the very same feet of his if I had to start out like he did. However, I want to congratulate him for what he did from the very start until he resigned two weeks ago. At least he tried his best. it's always worth trying!!   I'm pretty sure you were really amazed when you looked into your mailbox and found that you had such a book published by the outstanding Preppies! Ugh! Ha! Just kidding!!   My purpose for publishing such a long paper was to make up for what we missed since September.   In addition to my conclusion, I want you to feel free to give complete criticism and suggestions to us, the members of the KHN staff. We'll be more than glad to accept them if we find them reasonable enough. You may find some mistakes in this issue; however it will cause no problems, I'm pretty sure.   We made an addition to the KHN staff 2 days ago. Marvin Evink was appointed as proofreader. Well, I sure hope all our work will be well worth reading. Enjoy this issue and we'll see you next month.,  Thank you!!!!

"Clouds"

I am laying in the clouds, U live in the heaven, Looking at God, Beyond there's a big field of clouds, So soft, so light, So White, Angels are dancing in the air, The sky is very pure blue, Clouds are moving like a white blanket, Many clouds are floating softly, They are floating forever! Be-attitudes

He who is cowardly will do right because it is safer to do so...He who is overly ambitious will do right if it is to his advantage to do so... He who miserly will do right when he finds it cheaper to do so... He who average will do right because it is expected of him... But blessed is he who does right because it is right.

The Blind Man and His Dog

Many warm and beautiful stories have been told of the blind and their ever-faithful four-legged companions. This is such a story: A blind man and his dog were on a corner, waiting for the traffic light to change. Suddenly, and casually, the dog treated one of the blind man's legs as if it were a tree or fire-plug! The blind man said nothing, but reached into his pocket and pulled out a dog biscuit. A little old lady who had seen what the dog did was horrified. "You're not going to reward that beast," she said, "after what he just did to you?!!" "No, m'am," said the blind man. "I'm using this dog biscuit to find his mouth. When I find that, I'm going to kick his other end." By Jennifer Thomas

Quotations

Nothing to do but work, Nothing to eat but food, Nothing to wear but clothes To keep one from going nude.   I never saw a purple cow. I never hope to see one. But I can tell you, anyhow, I'd rather see them be one.   I slept and dreamed that life was Beauty; I woke and found that life was Duty - By Lorre Nan Weinstock

What is Love?

Love is defined in many ways. Love, in general term means strong affection. I Corinthian 13 Chapter, verse 4 derived from the Bible states that "Love is patient, live is kind and is not jealous; love does not brag and is not arrogant." Love without patience is impossible. Lots of patience is required to be compatible with everyone especially the time when getting married and having a family. Quarreling, using harsh words, and showing dislike of others should have no place in your heart. Instead be kind to each other, tender hearted, and forgive one another. Envy is jealousy. We should accept people as they are. it is better to be humble and not brag and get haughty. Remember life without love is like a tree without blossoms or fruit.   The famous quotation of love is "Love in your heart isn't put there to stay; Love isn't love till you give it away. There is no place for love to stay in your heart, otherwise it will develop into egotism with no self-respect. No one will love one another without giving away their feelings. Therefore life is for loving  and loving is for life, so live for love.   In conclusion, love has many meanings but most of all, remember to love one another and learn how to live for love.  - June Parrish

General News

A Last Minute Memo: On the behalf of my work as chairman of the Literary Contest for my class, I've decided to publish an extra message about the cancellation of the Literary Contest which was done in the last minute. Well, I don't mean that it was actually cancelled, but it was postponed to March the 28th. It was too much for us, for it seemed as of it really was cancelled.   It brought extreme frustration to us, the preps for it's the second time it has happened to us. As you know, the first one was supposed to be held before Christmas and we managed to take it generously like ladies and gentleman should. Since it's the second time now, we absolutely can't take it anymore, because we were positively ready both times!!! Is this fair? Ugh!   Now look at the disadvantages of the special occasion.   The Literary Contest was something that we could have gotten over with, so that we could give our full attention to our prep play, which will be held on the 24th of April. Now that you know what kind of disadvantage we have here, I'll just leave it up to you.   Another disadvantage is that you, the upperclassmen, who never bothered to make the Literary Contest a success, will have a whole month to get organized and so forth. Now what does this mean?! It absolutely means a possibility of loss chances for us; although I think ours is terrific. It's not fair because we are working three times as much, now since the Literary Contest has been postponed.   We had some Christmas poetry before Christmas; then we had to change it. See how we feel. There are more disadvantage that I could put down on this page, however I guess I've said enough.   it seems as if you, the upperclassmen, should have been prepared for this special occasion instead of us prep and freshmen!! This is obviously ironical. Is this a sign of responsibility? Remember, we look up to you all, the upperclassmen. We need you and a better Student Body Government through cooperation, motivation and inspiration... Do you have them???  Thank you - Edited by Wilton McMillan

Do you think Gallaudet should establish a technical college?

You know that Gallaudet College is the liberal arts college for the deaf in the world. A student, who is a senior in high school, passed Gallaudet's examination. So, he has considered about Gallaudet for his major. He has decided to come here to study the requirement courses first, then in his sophomore year, he has not decided certainly on a major. it is a problem to Gallaudet and the student. He must transfer to another college to take technical courses.   Do you think Gallaudet should establish a technical college like N.T.I.D.? I think Gallaudet should establish a technical college connected with the liberal arts college because it would be easier for any student who takes either technical or liberal arts courses on the campus.   Also, it would be good for the administration which is aware that student enrollment may continue to grow. I have noticed the liberal arts courses are very limited so we should have more technical courses here so we can a wider choice of majors. - George Garica, New York

Old Announcement

Once upon a time there was a young man, John Krpan who wanted to marry Lorraine Stoltz. So, he got an arrangement ready and made a visit with his minister. To your surprise, Claude Stout was his minister.   Later, their wedding day was successful and they went to the mountains for their honeymoon. Mr. Krpan was fully frustrated that his wife could not bear a baby. Overwhelmingly, he went to see his minister and told him to make another arrangement for having a divorce. Now Mr. Krpan is a lucky person as he does not have a wife. - ME-

How the Black List Helps Me!

I had to study hard to get my name off of that black list. It was because I made bad grades on three courses. I flunked Algebra II, Geometry and Personal Hygiene. I wanted to show Mr. Domich, Mr. Thomas Berg, my Vocational Rehabilitation counselor and my school that I really studied harder. Right now, I have my habit of study from seven to whenever I finish my homework. I learned from continue doing my homework every day. - Raymond Jeffrey Teel, Alabama

Were Jews in Ancient America?

I read a book called the Book of Mormon. It talks about Jews in Ancient America. The Old world did not know the Jews lived in America for 1,021 years. The Jews were vanished in 421 A.D.   I was amazed that the archaeologists discovered one hieroglyphic in Uxmal, Mexico. Uxmal had the most beautiful buildings in Ancient America. The hieroglyphic manifests the David's star. The star had six sides. This how they know that the Jews lived in Uxmal.   I read the old testament. it talked about David and Jerusalem. The Israelites built beautiful buildings in Jerusalem as in Uxmal. Now Jerusalem is ruined like Uxmal. Uxmal fell in about 300 A.D.  Do you believe it or not? - James Gillies, Arkansas

Snow

Every time a piece of snow falls on a place, we know we shall have fun and school may close. When there is a lot of snow, we would start snowball fights.   Most of us, young people know quickly that we will have fun with snow. We would rather play with it than drive it. Driving on snow is very hazardous. We can play with snow in many ways. We use snowmobiles, sleds, ski, skates or other things. That is where we can please ourselves.   Some older people hate snow because they have to be very careful when they walk or they will slip down and get hurt. Some animals hate it because they can not find any food to eat or they have to be chilled  to death.   When snow is everywhere, we think there is beautiful sparkling place. it makes every room brighter.   Some people love to have snow because they can use it as homemade ice cream. it tastes delicious.   Snow has many uses. We have different ideas or feelings about it. Snow can be useful or useless. - Russell Caldwell, Tennessee

Does each star in our flag stand for an individual state? No! The states collectively represent the fifty states of the union.   How long do trees live? The Bureau of Forestry says the average of trees is between 200 and 300 years!   Which is the slowest moving animal of all? The ordinary snail! Its fastest pace is almost a mile in three weeks!   Is a rare stamp more valuable of on its original envelope? Yes! A stamp attached to its cover is worth more than the stamp by itself! -  Nicholas Charles LeFors, Jr., Louisiana

Street Hockey comes to the Gallaudet Campus!

Hey Boys! Want to play Street Hockey? What's that? It is almost the same as ice hockey but you don't have to use ice skates and safety pads. You don't need any equipment except a stick and a ball. I already have a plastic puck, but.... I don't have many hockey sticks. So I suggest that you buy one. it will cost approximately $3.00. I would like to start it in the late spring.   I'm looking for interested guys who don't mind playing a rough game but previous experience isn't necessary. If you are interested in playing, or in learning, contact me; Jimmy Challis. Come on, don't sit around Ely Hall, Krug Hall or Dorm III! I don't insist that you play hockey. I just suggest it. So why not try it? I am sure you will enjoy it. - Jimmy Challis, Vermont

The Gallaudet College Landscape

In my opinion, I think Gallaudet College is a good college. But how terrible when you look at the campus! The landscape on the campus is of poor design. it looks like we feel that we are poor! You know that some universities have beautiful landscapes. They include many trees, beautiful flowers, and many green decorations around the campus. What are we doing with ours?   I suggest that we plant many trees on the border of the campus and on both sides of the sidewalks. We could plant cypress trees, pine trees, or oak trees, and other landscape decorations, and make this campus beautiful. The problem is that the administration can't afford to spend money. - George Garica, New York

My Experience with a Broken Hand

Two years ago, in November, my right hand was broken during a football game with the Aquinas Falcons in California. The Aquinas Falcons were a very good team which defeated my team, 16 - 8.   When the first half was almost over, I found that my hand was badly swollen when I pulled up my elbow pad, which has slid down over my left forearm. it was not painful at all because the weather was cold and rainy. During halftime, I showed my hand to my coach, Mr. Lanzi, and he said that it was only a muscle sprain. My other coach taped my hand tightly with white tape.   After the game, my hand became more swollen and I was forced to see my home doctor, Dr. Haller. he rebuked me harshly because I had refused to see him earlier. Then he took x-ray of my hand. I waited for a couple of minutes, and he told me that my fourth phalange was broken. I wore a cast for a month.   When the month was over, the cast was removed. My hand was thin and ugly and I could not grasp anything for a while.   Two months later my hand was normal again. I was glad that my hand was free from the cast. - Tom Bledsoe, California

Apathy by Marvin Evink

Before I begin to write this article, "Apathy", I would like to congratulate all the new editorial staff members. I do hope they will accomplish a lot in a short time!   Now I have decided to write this article, "Apathy" in the Knob Hill News. I don't mean to preach to you about it. Today's Gallaudetians are apathetic. They complain and criticize but we don't try to solve the problems that we have now. Because the people who are apathetic let the leaders at Gallaudet College do all the work for them. The leaders at Gallaudet College need you to be part of the social life at Gallaudet College. The leaders at our college can't do all the "Dirty work" by themselves.   I heard a lot of talk around Gallaudet College about the Experimental Preparatory Project with all the negative things that make you feel apathetic this year. Why do you use this programs name while you are in that program, then do not believe that negative things about it because you have not visited our program and seen it with your own eyes yet. Of course there are some disadvantages and advantages about the program. But why do you complain about the program when you never have visited it?   Other talk that I heard is that social life at Gallaudet College is going down. The truth about the social life going down is because you are expecting too much from SBG, and other organizations in planning the social life to fill your time with enjoyment. For those who are in the "Apathy World", why don't you do it yourself and at the same time you will feel it is worthwhile to add your experience along with the social life. You are You!!!!!   Now about my experience as a prep last semester, I Admit to you that I was involved in the "apathy world" because I did not adjust to the Gallaudet College life and I was not satisfied with the Experimental Prep Program and the Gallaudet world. But I backed up and complained about the things and lessons that I took and never tried to make them better. Now in the 2nd semester, I am happier and I'm more involved in working with the Jr. NAD convention and Class of '78 projects, and the National Jr. NAD Treasurer to kill my apathy and I feel so worthwhile now. WHY DON'T YOU DO IT LIKE THAT!!!   Before I stop writing this, I would like to share something with you.

 Herein:

Junior National Association of the Deaf Convention Is Coming Nearer   First of all, I would like to congratulate Ms. Melinda Chapel, a senior for being the chairwoman of Fourth Biennial National Association of the Deaf Convention and Ms. Madeline Davis, a sophomore for being the secretary of the convention. I do hope they accomplish a lot in the short time.   Our convention committees are in the process of making plans to host the 4th Biennial National Jr. NAD Convention which is scheduled on April 20-27, 1974 at our own Gallaudet College campus. Our convention theme is "To Change Is To Grow". We have already been informed that 35 different schools for the deaf will represented at our convention. We expect to hear more from other schools which have not informed us if they will send delegates to our convention yet. Two delegates and one advisor from each school will come.   We will have the workshop discussion, guest speakers, parties, meeting the Senators, Preparatory Class Play, a few field trips in Maryland and Washington, D.C., Miss Jr. NAD Pageant, an afternoon with N.T.D., banquet, awards presentation, Rock Gospel, etc. everything that interests the delegates and us in our lives.   As the National Jr. NAD Treasurer, I have already sent a business letter to Washington, D.C. Mayor Walter Washington in regard to a proclamation, "National Deaf Youth Week" which is scheduled for April 20-27, 1974 which will be made on April 15th, 1974 at his office, I do hope it will work out successfully!   I could write long, long pages about the convention plans, but I would rather hold it. Herein is the information of the tentative program of the convention and also the list of convention committee chairmen. IF YOU HAVE ANY BRILLIANT IDEAS OR SUGGESTIONS FOR THE CONVENTION AND ACTIVITIES, RUN AND TELL ANY CHAIRMAN COMMITTEE. Thank you !!! - Marvin Evink

SPORTS

Edited by Tim Boydrtum In intramural sports the prep class did rather well. the Women's Prep A basketball team took 1st place while the boys in the Prep class took 2nd place in Free Throw Contest.   Basketball-Well, the basketball team finished its season on a disappointing note, losing to D.C. Teachers in the Potomac Intercollegiate conference tournament but we didn't go down without a fight. Though the Basketball Team should look bright in the future for all the prep players contributed much this year. We, the prep class are proud of our boys.   Track-Out of about 23 men, we have preps pn this year's track team. They are Leif Sandberg, Roger Swanson, Harold Fjeldal, James Charles, David Gurly and Daniel Fitzpatrick. Good luck this year, guys. We're all behind you.   Wrestling-The wrestling team finished the season with a 1-14 mark but it was mostly due to a lack of heavy weights on the team. Dave Hendrick had a bye in the first round of the Mason Dixion Tournament but lost in the second round to U.M.B.C. by decision. The team should have a bright future with the enthusiasm we had this year.   Basketball-our guy contributed much in the tournament with Frank Haunkler scoring 20 points while Steve Nover chipped in with 11 points. Congratulations on your fine efforts.   Baseball-for this years baseball team we have 2 preps trying out for the team, David Reynolds and Tim Boydrtum. The first home game is on March 23 against Bowie State. So let's get out and support the team to a winning season.

A big Hello! Six preparatory girls who are on the women's basketball team are proud to announce to all of you that the basketball season record is 6-5. yeah!   One thing we have noticed is that we have had few spectators watching the home game. Where is your spirit for Gallaudet??? Come and watch the games! Show your spirit! We need your spirit!   We'll have our final district basketball tournament this coming Thursday at Montgomery College. our first game will be with Catholic University. Wish us good luck!!! We are having high hopes and a lot of self-confidence about beating Catholic University. Then we will play against Trinity or Prince George Community College, only if we win this first game.   To be honest, I'm glad that six prep girls can play for the varsity basketball team because the preppies usually can't participate in any sports. But as for this year, the preppies are allowed to participate in any sports. We are very lucky because I was told by someone that next year, the preppie girls can't participate in any sports. Is it fair??? No!! I hope the preppies can participate in any sport next year.   preppies are helpful to the Gally girls' basketball team! I am really proud of them! If not for them, the team would lose all games!   I'll put the records of the basketball games in the next issue in March. - By Libby Hathaway, Assistant Sport Editor

The preparatory A of the girls' in volleyball team grabbed the Championship during the I.M. Volleyball Tournament three weeks ago, defeating the mighty by the score of 2 out of 3 games. It was so thrilling and a hot game. Whew!   About the Prep B team, they did their best but they placed in    .  Anyway, they were the Prep A's fans and encouraged the team to win the championship.   I haven't received any information about our I.M. softball team yet. But we do still hope to win the championship again like we did in the volleyball tournament. - Wendy Lange

Hey fans, don't you realize that we, the Gallaudet Hockey Club have survived 500 more victories than any other sport in Gallaudet and yet we have only a few fans up there in the coliseum? We spend about $1500.00 a year for the use of the rink during the games. without this necessary $1500.00 how can we play next year. So I am begging you to come over and support us by donating or buying the tickets (booster tickets) or by paying fifty cents at the door so that we can survive  and continue our OLD GLORY BISON HOCKEY TEAM with our usual FIGHTING SPIRIT!!!
